Executive skills, sometimes called executive functioning, are the cognitive processes that help individuals plan, organize, manage time, regulate emotions, sustain attention, and follow through on tasks. These skills are essential for every child’s academic success and daily life, and they can be particularly challenging for students with learning differences.

At Janus, we take a strengths‑based, student‑centered approach to executive skills development. Rather than asking students to fit into a system, we design environments, routines, and supports that allow students to access learning while building independence and confidence over time.

The Janus Approach

Executive skills are a cornerstone of our program and are intentionally integrated into:

  • Individualized instruction tailored to each learner’s profile
  • Integrated assessment practices that inform instruction and support
  • Small class environments that allow for flexibility and relationship‑based teaching
  • Explicit strategy instruction paired with real‑world application
  • Outdoor and experiential learning, where planning, flexibility, and problem‑solving happen naturally

Our work is grounded in professional collaboration and ongoing reflection, allowing us to continuously refine how we support students with learning differences.
